Flat Back Studs and Hoops for Cartilage Piercings

Flat Back Cartilage Earrings for Everyday Comfort

A regular earring has a butterfly back that presses into the side of your head, which gets uncomfortable in cartilage. Flat-back studs, also called labret studs, have a smooth disk on the back instead, so they lie flat when you sleep, take a call, or wear headphones. Choose a threaded top that screws in, or a push-pin top that holds by tension and swaps in seconds. Tops range from small CZ gems and opals to a plain 3mm ball, a jeweled ball, and a triple-CZ design for extra sparkle.

Cartilage Hoop Earrings That Hug the Rim

Once your cartilage piercing has healed, a small hoop gives it a different look. Hinged hoops click shut for a seamless finish, from plain titanium rings in a range of colors to steel hoops paved with CZ stones and a triple-layered hoop that looks like three rings stacked together. There are also fixed-ball rings and a twisted hoop with a CZ gem ball. Some of these are listed as nose rings because the same hoop works in several piercings; for your ear, what matters is the gauge and diameter.

Cartilage Earring Sizes and Post Lengths

Most cartilage piercings are done at 16G, and most of these earrings are 16G. A few hoops come in 18G or 20G for piercings made at a finer gauge; don't go thinner than your piercing, or the hole can shrink. Stud posts run from 1/4" (6mm) to 3/8" (10mm): a fresh piercing needs room for swelling, and a healed one usually suits a shorter post that sits flatter. Cartilage Earrings FAQ

Which cartilage earrings are hypoallergenic?

The titanium pieces are nickel-free: the 16G titanium labret stud with a CZ gem, the 16G titanium ring with a 3mm ball, the 16G titanium ring with a 3mm gem ball, and the 20G titanium seamless hinged hoop. The surgical steel earrings contain a small amount of nickel bound into the alloy, so if steel has bothered your ears before, stick with titanium. See more in titanium body jewelry.

Can I sleep in cartilage earrings?

Flat-back studs are the most comfortable to sleep in, since the disk lies flat against your head and there's nothing to catch on the pillowcase. Hoops can snag or twist in bedding. While a cartilage piercing is healing, many people sleep on the other side or use a travel pillow so there's no pressure on the ear.

Can I wear cartilage earrings in my earlobe?

Yes. Flat-back studs and small hoops are comfortable in lobes too. Most of these are 16G, a little thicker than the 20G or 18G many lobes are pierced at, so a healed lobe may feel snug at first. If your lobe is pierced thinner, choose one of the 18G or 20G hoops, or ask your piercer what fits.
