Flat-Back Studs for a Healing Helix
A flat-back labret stud has a flat disk on the back instead of a butterfly clasp, so it lies flat against your head when you sleep or wear headphones. That makes it the usual choice while a helix is healing. Pick internally threaded titanium labrets or push-pin threadless labrets with a CZ gem, an opal, a jeweled ball, or a simple 3mm ball. A 16G triple-CZ cartilage earring adds a little more sparkle.
Helix Hoops Once You've Healed
Many people switch to a hoop once the helix has settled. Hinged rings click shut and are the easiest to change; choose an 18G hoop paved with CZ stones or a 16G triple-layered hoop that looks like a stack of rings. Captive bead and fixed ball rings give a classic look, and a 20G twisted hoop with a gem ball is a delicate option. See every closure style in hinged rings.
Helix Piercing Jewelry Sizes
Most helix piercings are done at 16G. For studs, a 5/16" (8mm) or 1/4" (6mm) post is common once healed, and a longer post helps during swelling. For hoops, 5/16" (8mm) hugs the rim and 3/8" (10mm) sits a little looser. Not sure of your size? See our body jewelry gauge size chart, or ask your piercer to confirm your gauge and fit.
Helix Piercing Jewelry FAQ
What size hoop do I need for my helix?
Measure from your piercing to the outer edge of the rim. A hoop with an inner diameter a little over twice that distance will close around the rim without pinching. 5/16" (8mm) suits many helix piercings, and 3/8" (10mm) sits looser. Not sure of your size? See our body jewelry gauge size chart.
When should I switch to a shorter helix stud?
A new helix is usually pierced with a longer post to leave room for swelling. Once the swelling settles, your piercer can swap it for a shorter post that sits flatter and catches less on hair and pillows. Ask them when your piercing is ready.
Do these helix studs have butterfly backs?
Most of our helix studs are labret style, with a flat disk on the back instead of a butterfly clasp. The disk lies flat against your head, which is more comfortable for sleeping and wearing headphones. See every style in labret studs.
