How a Nose Bone Stays In
A nose bone is a short straight post with a slightly wider ball on the end. You push the ball through the piercing with a little pressure, and it rests inside the nostril to keep the stud from sliding out. Because there's no bend or twist, a nose bone sits flatter than a corkscrew or L-bend. Nose bones are made for healed piercings, since pushing the ball through can irritate a fresh one.
Stone and CZ Nose Bones
For color, our 20G sterling silver nose bones carry small semi-precious stones like turquoise, tiger eye, and jade. The 18G surgical steel nose bones come with a 3mm CZ gem in clear, aqua, pink, purple, blue, green, red, or black. If you want a simpler look, choose the 18G surgical steel nose bone with a ball, dome, flat disk, or spike top.
18G vs 20G Nose Bones
Our nose bones come in 18G and 20G, the two most common nostril gauges. An 18G nose bone is slightly thicker and a good fit for piercings done at 18G, while 20G is slimmer. Wearing a thinner nose bone in a larger piercing can let it slip out, so match your gauge. Not sure of your size? See our body jewelry gauge size chart, or ask your piercer to confirm your gauge and fit. Prefer a stud that twists in? Browse all nose studs.
Nose Bones FAQ
Why is a nose bone hard to take out?
The ball on the end is slightly wider than the post, which is what keeps it from sliding out. Removing it takes a firm, steady pull. That makes a nose bone great if you rarely change your stud, and less handy if you swap often; an L-bend is easier.
Will a nose bone fall out?
A nose bone that matches your gauge stays in well, because the ball end sits inside the nostril. Wearing a 20G nose bone in an 18G piercing can let it slip. If yours feels loose, go up to the gauge you were pierced with.
Is a sterling silver nose bone okay for everyday wear?
Sterling silver looks lovely but can tarnish and is best in a fully healed piercing. Take it out if your nostril gets irritated. For daily wear, our 18G surgical steel nose bones or titanium nose studs are sturdier choices.
