Tragus Earrings: Studs and Small Hoops

Flat-Back Tragus Studs

The tragus sits right where earbuds and phones press, so a flat-back labret stud is the most comfortable choice. The flat disk rests inside the ear without poking, and only the top shows. Choose a 16G surgical steel labret with a white opal, or a titanium tragus stud with a CZ gem from our labret studs. Studs are the usual pick while the tragus heals.

Tiny Hoops for a Healed Tragus

A small hoop hugs the edge of the tragus for a different look. Choose a 16G hinged hoop with a fixed ball, a 16G titanium ring with a 3mm gem ball, or a light 18G/20G captive bead ring. A snug diameter keeps the hoop close, so it doesn't catch on earbuds or hair. Hoops are best once the piercing has fully healed.

16G Tragus Jewelry Sizing

Most tragus piercings are done at 16G. For studs, a 1/4" (6mm) post suits most healed piercings, while 5/16" (8mm) leaves room for swelling. For hoops, 5/16" (8mm) is a common snug fit. Not sure of your size? See our body jewelry gauge size chart, or ask your piercer to confirm your gauge and fit.

Tragus Jewelry FAQ

Can I wear earbuds with a tragus piercing?

Earbuds sit right against the tragus, so they can press on the jewelry. A flat-back stud with a small top is the most comfortable. While healing, many people switch to over-ear headphones.

What's the difference between a tragus and an anti-tragus?

The tragus is the small flap in front of your ear canal. The anti-tragus is the ridge opposite it, just above the earlobe. Tragus jewelry is usually a flat-back stud, while the anti-tragus often takes a curved barbell; see anti-tragus jewelry.

How do I change a tragus stud?

Hold the flat disk inside your ear with one finger, then unscrew the top counterclockwise or pull a push-pin top straight out. Put the new top in the same way. A mirror helps, since the disk sits behind the tragus.
