Inner Conch vs Outer Conch

The conch is the large cup of cartilage in the middle of your ear. An inner conch piercing sits in the center of that cup and is usually worn with a flat-back stud, which shows off the gem and sits flat in the bowl of the ear. An outer conch is pierced through the flatter area closer to the rim, and it's where hoops look best, since the ring can wrap around the edge. Studs are the usual pick while a conch heals, and a hoop can follow once it has settled.

Conch Hoops That Wrap the Ear

For an outer conch, a hoop needs enough diameter to reach around the rim. How do I measure for a conch hoop?

Measure from the center of your piercing to the outer edge of your ear rim. The hoop's inner diameter needs to be a little more than twice that distance so it can wrap the rim without pressing. Your piercer can measure it for you; see our body jewelry gauge size chart for converting sizes.

Why do some conch rings say septum or nose ring in the title?

Hinged hoops, horseshoes, and captive bead rings are the same jewelry across piercings, so listings are often named after their most common use. What matters for your conch is the gauge and diameter, not the name. Most conch piercings take 16G, and some are pierced at 18G.

How do I put in a hinged conch hoop?

Swing the hinged segment open, guide the open end through your conch from the front, then press the segment closed until it clicks. Because the conch is thick cartilage, go slowly and keep the ring lined up with the piercing. If it resists, stop and ask your piercer for help.
