Labret Studs and Flat Back Earrings

Why Flat-Back Labrets Are So Popular

A labret has a flat disk on the back instead of a butterfly clasp, so nothing pokes your gums, your head, or your phone. That's why labret studs are the standard for lip piercings and the most comfortable choice for cartilage like the tragus and helix, especially while you sleep. Many people now call them flat back earrings and wear them in regular lobes too.

Threaded or Threadless Labrets

Internally threaded labrets have a top that screws into the post, and the threads stay hidden inside so the post slides through smoothly. Threadless, or push-pin, labrets have a top with a slightly bent pin that presses into the post and holds by tension, which makes changing tops quick. We carry titanium labrets with CZ gems, 2mm and 3mm stones, spikes, and multicolor PVD finishes, plus surgical steel labrets with opals, jeweled balls, and black spike or ball tops.

16G and 18G Labret Stud Sizes

Most lip and cartilage piercings use a 16G labret, and a few of our styles also come in 18G. Post lengths are 1/4" (6mm), 5/16" (8mm), and 3/8" (10mm); longer posts leave room for swelling, and shorter posts sit flatter once healed, which also helps protect teeth and gums in lip piercings. Labret Studs FAQ

Can I wear a labret stud in my earlobe?

Yes. Flat back earrings are just labret studs, and many people wear them in lobes because they're comfortable for sleeping and phone calls. Most of our labrets are 16G, while lobes are often pierced at 20G or 18G, so choose an 18G style if your lobe is thinner.

Can I use a threadless top on a threaded labret post?

No. A threadless top has a pin that pushes into a threadless post, and an internally threaded top screws into a threaded post, so the two don't mix. Stick with tops and posts of the same type, ideally from the same brand.

How do I tighten a push-pin labret?

Take the top out and bend its pin very slightly, then push it back into the post. The bend creates tension that holds the top in, so a slightly bigger bend grips more firmly. Don't bend it back and forth repeatedly, or the pin can weaken.
